Can I Enter Georgia With a UAE or GCC Residence Visa in 2026?
Every week our office in Tbilisi gets the same message on WhatsApp. Someone is sitting in Dubai, Sharjah, Doha or Riyadh, they have found flights to Tbilisi for next month, and they want to know one thing before they pay for anything.
I have a UAE residence visa. Can I just fly to Georgia?
Fair question. And the honest answer is not a simple yes.
We are Travel Door, a destination management company operating on the ground in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan since 2017. We handle arrivals at Tbilisi International Airport almost daily. That means we do not read about these entry rules in a policy document. We see how they are actually applied at the counter, and we see which travellers walk through in two minutes and which ones get pulled aside.
Here is what you actually need to know.
Short Answer: It Depends on Your Passport, Not Just Your UAE Visa
Most GCC residents can enter Georgia visa free for 90 days within any 180 day period, as long as their residence permit is valid on both the entry and the exit date. But if you hold a passport from one of 17 listed countries, your GCC residence permit must have at least one year of remaining validity. If it does not, you need a Georgian visa before you fly.
Your residence visa is a supporting document. Your passport nationality is what decides the rule that applies to you. That distinction is where almost every problem starts.
Who Needs a Visa and Who Does Not
UAE and GCC Citizens
If you hold a passport from the UAE or another GCC state, this is the easy category. You enter visa free, no application, no fee. UAE citizens can stay up to one full year. Your passport should have at least 90 days of validity remaining.
Nothing complicated here. Most of the confusion in this topic does not apply to you.
UAE and GCC Residents
This is where most of our clients sit. You hold an Indian, Filipino, Sri Lankan, Nepali, Egyptian, Jordanian or similar passport, and you live and work in the Gulf on a residence permit.
For most of these nationalities, the rule is straightforward. You get visa free entry for 90 days in any 180 day period, provided your residence permit or residence visa is valid on the day you enter Georgia and still valid on the day you leave. This is confirmed on the Embassy of Georgia to the UAE visa information page.
That second part catches people. We have had travellers whose Emirates ID expired three days into their trip. Technically that breaks the condition. Check your exit date against your permit expiry before you book anything.
The 17 Country Exception
In 2025 Georgia tightened this rule, and the change is still catching people out in 2026. If you hold a passport from any of the following countries, your GCC residence permit must be a valid multiple entry permit with at least one year remaining on the day you enter Georgia.
The affected nationalities are:
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Uganda, Yemen.
If you hold one of these passports and your residence permit has ten months left, you do not qualify for visa free entry. Ten months is not one year. There is no flexibility on this at the border.
In that case you apply for a C1 tourist visa or an eVisa before travelling. You can check your own status directly on the official entering Georgia eligibility page.
What “One Year Validity” Actually Means in Practice
It is measured from your date of entry into Georgia, not from the date you book, and not from the date you apply for anything.
So if you are flying on 12 March, your residence permit must be valid until at least 12 March the following year. We ask every client from these nationalities to send us a photo of their permit expiry date before we confirm anything, purely because it saves a lot of pain later.
What Changed for 2026 and Why It Matters Now
Mandatory Travel Insurance From 1 January 2026
This is the newest rule, and it is the one most travellers still do not know about.
From 1 January 2026, every tourist entering Georgia must carry valid travel or health insurance covering at least GEL 30,000 for the full duration of the stay. This applies to visa free travellers too. It applies to GCC citizens. It applies to everyone. The US Embassy in Georgia published a notice confirming this requirement.
The policy can be issued by a Georgian or a foreign insurer. It must be in Georgian or English. Border officers may ask to see it, and travelling without it can lead to refused entry.
We now include this in our pre departure checklist for every single arrival we handle, because a valid visa status means very little if you cannot produce the insurance document when asked.
Why These Rules Exist
Georgia has one of the most open visa policies in the region. The tightening was not aimed at tourists. It was aimed at reducing misuse of residence based visa exemptions and improving verification at the border.
The practical effect for you is simple. Officers now check documents that they used to wave through. The rules themselves did not become harsh. The enforcement became consistent.
How This Plays Out at Tbilisi Airport
Immigration in Tbilisi is generally fast and polite. But officers now ask more questions, and they ask for paper.
What we consistently observe is that travellers who have documents ready, printed and organised move through quickly. Travellers who say “it is in my email, let me find it” spend far longer at the desk, and sometimes get moved to secondary checking.
The rule is not the problem. Preparation is.
The 90/180 Day Rule Explained Simply
How the Rolling Window Works
This is the most misunderstood part of Georgian visa policy, so let us keep it plain.
It is not 90 days per calendar year. It is a rolling 180 day window.
On any given day you are in Georgia, look back over the last 180 days. Your total time spent in Georgia during that window cannot exceed 90 days.
A Simple Example
Say you visit Georgia for 60 days in February and March. You then return in June. Looking back 180 days from your June arrival, those 60 days still count. So you have around 30 days left, not a fresh 90.
Come back in November instead, and those earlier days have rolled out of the window. You get your full allowance again.
Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs publishes a free visit planning calculator on police.ge. If you travel to Georgia frequently, use it before booking. It takes two minutes.
What Happens If You Overstay
Overstaying, even by one day, can result in fines, deportation or a future entry ban. The limit is checked at exit, not at entry, so nobody will warn you on the way in.
For a standard holiday of one or two weeks, this rule is irrelevant. For repeat visitors and business travellers, it matters a great deal.
What This Actually Looks Like at the Airport
This section is the part we wish someone had written years ago, because it is where our real experience sits.
The Most Common Mistake We See From Gulf Based Travellers
The mistake is almost never the visa status. It is assuming the residence visa alone does the work.
People arrive with a valid Emirates ID and nothing else. No printed hotel booking. No return ticket printout. No insurance certificate. Just a phone, sometimes on 4 percent battery after a night flight.
The eligibility was fine. The presentation was not.
We have also seen the reverse problem, where someone genuinely was not eligible under the 17 country rule but nobody told them at the booking stage. That is a much harder situation, and it usually ends before boarding rather than at the border.
The Checklist We Send Every Client Before They Fly
This is the actual list our operations team shares with GCC based travellers. It is not theoretical. It exists because of situations we have had to solve in real time.

Carry printed copies. Not just screenshots. A phone that dies at the immigration desk is a genuinely common problem, and it is entirely avoidable.
Two Travellers, Same Flight, Different Outcomes
This is a pattern we have seen repeat more than once.
Two people fly the same route from Dubai. Both hold South Asian passports. Both have valid UAE residence visas. Both are eligible.
One has a folder with printed insurance, hotel voucher, return ticket and a bank statement. Cleared in under three minutes.
The other has everything in an inbox, no insurance policy purchased, and a residence permit expiring shortly after the return date. Held at the desk, questioned, delayed, and left starting a short holiday already stressed.
Same eligibility. Different preparation. That is the whole lesson.
What If You Are Not Eligible for Visa Free Entry
If your residence permit does not meet the one year requirement and you hold one of the 17 listed passports, you are not stuck. You just need to apply in advance.
The eVisa Route
Georgia runs an official electronic visa system through the Georgian eVisa portal. The process is straightforward:
- Check your eligibility on the portal
- Complete the application form in English
- Upload your passport scan and a recent photo
- Verify your email within the time window given
- Complete payment within the stated window
- Wait up to five working days for a decision
- Print the approved eVisa PDF and carry it with you
Apply at least two to three weeks before travel. Fees are not refunded if the application is refused, so accuracy matters more than speed.
The Embassy Route
For a C1 tourist visa, you can apply at the Embassy of Georgia in Abu Dhabi. You will need your passport, residence permit, insurance meeting the GEL 30,000 minimum, accommodation proof, a confirmed return ticket, recent bank statements and a completed application form.
Book the appointment early. Availability is the usual bottleneck, not the decision itself.
If Your Application Is Refused
You have two options.
You can appeal to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia within one month of being notified. This works best when you believe the refusal was based on incorrect information.
Or you can reapply, correcting whatever caused the refusal. Most refusals we hear about come from weak financial proof, missing insurance or inconsistent information across documents. Those are fixable.
Why Travellers Get Turned Away Even With Valid Status
Being eligible and being admitted are two different things. Final discretion always sits with the immigration officer.
The recurring reasons are predictable:
- Supporting documents not carried or not printed
- Insurance missing or below the required coverage
- Names, dates or addresses that do not match across documents
- No clear answer when asked about the purpose of the trip
- Residence permit expiring during or shortly after the trip
None of these are about the rules being unfair. They are about looking like a prepared traveller rather than an unclear one.
