Dashbashi Canyon Tour from Tbilisi: The Diamond Bridge and the Gorge Below It
A glass bridge strung across a volcanic gorge, a diamond-shaped cafe hanging in mid-air, and a trail that drops to a waterfall on the canyon floor. Under two hours from Tbilisi, and nothing else in Georgia looks like it.

A Dashbashi Canyon tour is a day trip from Tbilisi to the Tsalka plateau, about 92 km southwest, taking 7 to 8 hours. The canyon runs roughly 8 km along the Khrami River, and the main attraction is the Diamond Bridge, a 240 metre glass walkway suspended about 280 metres above the gorge floor with a glass cafe at its centre. Most visitors add the 1.8 km trail down to the waterfall. The site is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 and closes without warning in rain, snow or heavy fog.
Why Dashbashi Canyon
The Khrami River has been cutting into the basalt of the Tsalka plateau for around two million years. What it left behind is a gorge roughly 8 km long with layered volcanic walls, more than a hundred small waterfalls threaded along it, and a floor that sits several degrees cooler than the plateau above.
For most of its history almost nobody came here. That changed when the Diamond Bridge opened above it, a glass-floored span with a faceted cafe hanging at the midpoint. It turned a remote gorge in Kvemo Kartli into one of the most photographed places in the country.
What makes it worth a day rather than a photo stop is the contrast. You walk on glass above the canyon in the morning, then descend into it on foot and stand under the waterfall by early afternoon.
At a Glance
- Diamond Bridge: a 240 metre glass walkway with a suspended glass cafe at its centre
- The descent: a paved 1.8 km trail to the waterfall, with a steep climb back up
- Adrenaline options: sky bike across the gorge, zipline and a canyon swing, each ticketed separately
- St George Church: a tenth to eleventh century stone church on the hill above the gorge
- Easy to extend: Tsalka Reservoir, Asureti and Birtvisi all sit within an hour
A Gorge You Can Walk Over and Into
The rim sits at roughly 1,450 metres and the canyon floor at about 1,110, so the air changes as you descend. The gorge itself runs about 8 km along the Khrami River.
Your Day, Step by Step
The order we run it, leaving Tbilisi around 09:00
The Drive up to the Plateau
Two routes climb out of Tbilisi, one through Rustavi highway toward Tetritskaro and one through Tskneti and Manglisi. Both are paved, and both change character quickly as the city gives way to open volcanic highland.
Kass Land Visitor Centre
Tickets, bag check and the queue for the bridge all start here. Everyone crossing the glass has to pull disposable covers over their shoes, so slip-on footwear saves time.
We aim to arrive close to opening. By midday on a weekend the bridge queue can run long.
The Diamond Bridge
The full span is glass, and the gorge drops away beneath your feet the whole way across. Halfway along, a diamond-shaped glass pod hangs off the bridge and works as a cafe, which is the single best place to photograph the canyon.
The structure moves slightly in the wind. That is normal, and it is also the part most guests remember.
Down to the Waterfall
A paved path switchbacks 1.8 km from the rim to the canyon floor, past exposed basalt layers and small side falls. At the bottom, a metal walkway brings you to the base of the main waterfall, sometimes listed as the Diamond Waterfall, where the water drops over mossy terraces into a green pool.
The descent is easy. The climb back is not, and it is the part travellers underestimate. On-site vehicles run for anyone who would rather not walk it.
Adrenaline, If You Want It
A sky bike runs on a cable across the gorge, alongside a zipline and a canyon swing. Each is ticketed separately at the site and each has its own height and weight limits, so we confirm eligibility before the day rather than at the gate.
St George Church on the Hill
A stone church from the tenth or eleventh century stands on the ridge above the gorge, with carved inscriptions and old tombstones, one of them showing a rider on horseback. The inside shortcut is closed, so it is reached on foot from the main gate along the outside road.
Tsalka Reservoir and the Road Home
A short stop at the reservoir on the way out gives the last open view across the Javakheti highlands before the road drops back toward the city.
What Is Usually Included
Included
Round-trip air-conditioned transport from Tbilisi, a professional English-speaking guide, hotel pickup and drop-off, and water on the road. We can arrange entrance tickets and timed entry in advance so your group is not queuing at the gate.
Not included
Canyon and Diamond Bridge entrance, the sky bike, zipline and canyon swing, lunch and personal expenses. Entrance policy at the site varies by nationality and age, so we confirm the current tariff when we quote.
Getting There
| Option | Time from Tbilisi | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Private guided tour | About 1 hour 40 minutes | Door to door, tickets arranged, flexible timing around the weather |
| Self-drive | About 1 hour 40 minutes | Two paved routes, via Tetritskaro or via Manglisi; parking at the visitor centre |
| Marshrutka | 2 to 2.5 hours in total | From Navtlughi station toward Tsalka, then a short taxi ride to the canyon |
Know Before You Go
The site closes immediately in rain, snow or heavy fog, and entrance tickets are not refunded. The forecast for the Tsalka plateau is often nothing like the forecast for Tbilisi. We check conditions the morning of your tour and hold a fallback route, so a closure does not cost you the day.
Who This Day Suits
A good fit if you
- Want a landscape that looks nothing like the rest of Georgia
- Are comfortable with a steep 1.8 km climb, or happy to skip it
- Like viewpoints, photography and a bit of adrenaline
- Have already done Kazbegi or Kakheti and want something different
Think twice if you
- Have limited mobility or are travelling with children under 1.2 m
- Are uneasy with heights or transparent floors
- Want a full day of sights rather than one strong half day
- Are visiting on a weekend in July or August, when queues are longest
If a full day of variety matters more, our Mtskheta Tour or Gori Tour pack more stops into the same hours.
What Else Is Nearby
Asureti, the German village
Founded as Elizabethtal by nineteenth century Swabian settlers, with original colonial houses and a Gothic Lutheran church. Roughly 30 km from the canyon.
Birtvisi Canyon
A maze of volcanic rock towers in Algeti National Park, about 35 km away, and a proper hike rather than a viewpoint.
Algeti and Didgori
Algeti Lake, also listed as Algeti Reservoir, for a quiet stop, and the Didgori monument, a row of vast steel swords on a ridge marking the 1121 battle.
When to Go
By season
Spring brings the strongest water flow and the greenest gorge. Autumn is the photographers' season, with cooler air and colour on the slopes. Summer is hottest and busiest, and the exposed rim offers little shade. In winter the waterfall can freeze into a single ice column, though closures are more frequent.
By day and hour
Weekday mornings are the quietest, and the light on the gorge is best before midday haze builds. Friday afternoon through Sunday is peak domestic tourism, when the bridge queue is at its longest.

Dashbashi Canyon Tour Questions

About 92 km southwest, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes by road. Two routes climb to the plateau, one via Tetritskaro and one via Manglisi.
How long is the Diamond Bridge and how high is it?
The glass bridge spans about 240 metres and hangs roughly 280 metres above the canyon floor, with a diamond-shaped glass cafe suspended at its midpoint.
What are the opening hours at Dashbashi Canyon?
The site is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00. It closes immediately during rain, snow or heavy fog for safety, and entrance tickets are not refunded in that case.
How hard is the hike into the canyon?
The trail is paved and about 1.8 km each way. Going down is easy, and the climb back is steep enough that many people find it the hardest part of the day. On-site vehicles are available for anyone who would rather not walk it.
Is there a height or age restriction?
Visitors under 1.2 metres in height cannot access the glass bridge or the canyon trail. The sky bike, zipline and swing each have their own separate height and weight limits.

Closed shoes with grip are best for the trail, and disposable covers are handed out at the bridge entrance and must be worn over your footwear on the glass.
Is Dashbashi Canyon suitable for wheelchair users?
No. The glass bridge cannot take wheeled mobility devices and the trail has steep sections and metal stairways. Rim viewpoints near the visitor centre remain accessible.
What is the best time of year to visit?
Spring for the strongest waterfall, autumn for colour and quiet, summer for warmth but with crowds and little shade. Weekday mornings are the calmest in any season.
Can Dashbashi Canyon be combined with other sights?
