Why Visit Kazbegi
Kazbegi, officially renamed Stepantsminda, sits on the Terek River at the foot of Mount Kazbek, a dormant volcano roughly 5,047 metres high and the sixth-highest peak in the Caucasus. The drive up alone is one of the reasons people take a Kazbegi tour in the first place: the Georgian Military Highway climbs from vineyards outside Tbilisi to alpine passes in under three hours, a route that has carried travellers between the Caucasus and the steppe since antiquity.
What makes Kazbegi different from a simple mountain viewpoint is the density of what sits along the way. A single day trip can move through a Soviet-era reservoir, a medieval fortress, a working ski resort, a Cold War-era monument, and a fourteenth-century church that looks down on all of it. Hikers get Truso Valley and Juta as extensions. History travellers get Ananuri and Dariali Gorge. Photographers get Mount Kazbek itself, which spends about half the year hiding behind cloud.
What a Kazbegi Tour Covers
A Kazbegi tour is a guided trip along the Georgian Military Highway from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda, with stops at the landmarks along the route and, usually, a walk or short drive up to Gergeti Trinity Church. A standard day tour takes 9 to 11 hours round trip and covers Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress, Gudauri, the Friendship Monument, and Gergeti Church.
Travellers with more time add Truso Valley or Juta, both of which need a separate half or full day and, for Truso, a 4x4 rather than a standard minivan. Two nights in Stepantsminda is enough to combine the classic route with one of these extensions without rushing either.
Kazbegi is unusual among Georgia's mountain destinations because almost everything worth seeing sits on or just off a single road. Built in the fourteenth century on a hilltop opposite Mount Kazbek, this is the image most people associate with a Kazbegi tour. The final stretch up is by 4x4 or on foot; the walk takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way and the drive about 20 minutes.

Two waterfalls, Big and Small, reached by an easy 20 to 40 minute hike from the road. The Big Gveleti Waterfall drops about 30 metres into a pool known locally as the Lake of Love. A good half-day add-on for travellers who want one short hike without committing to Truso or Juta.
Off-Road Extensions: Truso Valley and Juta
These need a dedicated half day or more, and Truso specifically needs a 4x4- Truso Valley15 to 25km from Stepantsminda, open roughly May to October
A wild, largely abandoned gorge along the upper Terek River, known for orange and white travertine mineral-spring terraces, the ruined Zakagori Fortress, and the ghost village of Ketrisi. The paved road ends well before the valley, so this is either a long flat hike or a 4x4 excursion, and it is closed effectively all winter.

A high alpine valley at 2,200 metres beneath the jagged Chaukhi Massif, sometimes called the Georgian Dolomites. The Fifth Season cabin marks the start of the main hiking trail to Chaukhi Lake, with the more demanding Chaukhi Pass beyond it for experienced hikers. En route, Sno village is worth a stop for its defensive tower and carved stone-head sculptures.
What to Eat on a Kazbegi Tour
Most Kazbegi tours stop in Pasanauri, a small town on the Georgian Military Highway known across the country as the home of khinkali, Georgia's broth-filled dumplings. Eating them here, close to where the dish comes from, is a genuinely different experience from a Tbilisi restaurant version.
Along the road near Ananuri and Zhinvali, roadside stalls sell local honey, often chestnut or raspberry, and this makes a natural tasting stop between the fortress and Gudauri. In Stepantsminda itself, look for mountain trout from the Terek, hearty highland-style khachapuri, and a glass of chacha to finish, ideally with Mount Kazbek still visible through the window.

Planning Your Kazbegi Tour
When to Go
May to October is the reliable window. In winter, the Georgian government periodically closes stretches of the Military Highway, including the road to Stepantsminda and Gergeti Church, because of snow and avalanche risk, so a winter Kazbegi tour needs a flexible date. Truso Valley and Juta are effectively closed from November to April regardless of the main road's status.
Getting to Kazbegi
Stepantsminda sits about 160km from Tbilisi, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road on a clear day, longer with stops. Getting Around Once You Are There
The road up to Gergeti Church is steep gravel, normally done by 4x4 taxi from the town centre rather than on foot unless you plan the full hike. Truso Valley needs its own 4x4, and Juta needs a vehicle as far as the village before the hiking starts, which is why our Kazbegi excursions include a car and driver for the whole day.
Altitude and Weather
Gergeti Church sits at 2,170 metres and Juta at 2,200 metres, both low enough that altitude sickness is rare, but the weather at these elevations changes fast. We recommend a warm layer and a waterproof shell even in July.
