Martvili Canyon Tour: The Boat Ride, the Trail and the Rest of the Day
Turquoise water between limestone walls, a rubber boat that takes you where the path cannot go, and a canyon that Georgian nobles once used as a private swimming pool. Fifty kilometres from Kutaisi, and easy to get wrong if you arrive at the wrong hour.
Prepared by Travel Door, Georgia’s award-winning DMC
Martvili Canyon, also called Gachedili Canyon, is a 2.4 km gorge on the Abasha River in Samegrelo, western Georgia. Visitors walk a 700 metre circular trail with bridges and viewing platforms, then take a short inflatable boat ride of roughly 300 metres into the part of the gorge that has no footpath. It is 50 km from Kutaisi, about an hour, and 277 km from Tbilisi, so most tours run from Kutaisi and pair it with Prometheus Cave or Okatse Canyon. Entrance, the boat and the zipline are ticketed separately, and the boat does not run when the river is high.
Why Martvili
The Abasha River has cut a narrow corridor through limestone here, roughly 2.4 kilometres long with walls between 50 and 70 metres high. The water runs an unusual green because of the mineral content, and the walls stay mossy and green even in December.
The Dadiani family, who ruled Samegrelo, used the pools here as a private bathing spot. The stone staircase you walk down is theirs. The site was almost forgotten until the 2000s, became a national monument in 2013, and was rebuilt with bridges and platforms in 2019.
What it is not is a wilderness. This is a managed, ticketed attraction with a visitor centre, a queue and vendors. Knowing that in advance is most of what separates a good visit from a disappointing one.
The Canyon in Sixty Seconds
- Two experiences: the trail looks down on the gorge, the boat takes you inside it
- Historic route: the Dadiani walkway, a 30-step limestone staircase, two natural bridges and three platforms
- Odd details: fossilised nautilus shells in the rock and nineteenth-century water mills along the path
- Extras: a zipline near the visitor centre, ticketed separately from entry
- Almost always combined: Prometheus Cave, Okatse Canyon or Kinchkha Waterfall in the same day
Two Ways to See the Canyon
They show you completely different things, and the boat is not included in the entrance ticket
The boat ride
Roughly 300 metres and 15 to 20 minutes on an inflatable boat, into the northern stretch of the gorge that has no footpath at all.
- Closest views of the walls and small falls
- The photograph everyone comes for
- Life jackets provided, guide paddles
- Children under five or under one metre cannot ride
- Cancelled when the river runs high after rain
The walking trail
A paved 700 metre loop on the southern side, elevated above the water, with bridges and platforms looking down into the gorge.
- Included in the entrance ticket
- Waterfalls, viewing platforms and metal bridges
- The Dadiani staircase and old water mills
- Manageable for most fitness levels
- Slippery after rain, so grip matters
Do the trail first while the boat queue builds, then take the boat. Swimming anywhere in the protected gorge is not allowed, including the Dadiani pools.
How the Day Runs from Kutaisi
Timings for the standard Martvili and Prometheus combination
Leave Kutaisi
An hour on good roads through Samegrelo farmland. Groups leaving at midday exist, but the early start is what keeps you ahead of the coaches.
Visitor centre at Inchkhuri
Tickets, the queue and the entrance are all here. We buy entry, boat and any extras in one go so nobody stands in three separate lines.
The trail
Down the Dadiani staircase, along the loop past the mills and the platforms, with time at the waterfall viewpoints.
The boat
Life jackets on, into the gorge. Twenty minutes, and the only part of the day where a waterproof pouch for your phone is genuinely useful.
Lunch nearby
Megrelian food is the spiciest in Georgia. Elarji, gebzhalia and sulguni-heavy dishes are the local specialities.
Prometheus Cave or Okatse
The cave runs about 1.4 km of lit halls some 80 metres below the surface, with its own underground boat. Okatse is the cliff-edge walkway instead, for those who prefer daylight.
Back in Kutaisi
Early enough for dinner in town. From Tbilisi the same day runs three to four hours longer at each end.
What the Ticket Covers
The single most common complaint about Martvili is paying three times without expecting it
Fees change, and several popular guides online still quote outdated figures. We confirm the current tariff when we quote and buy the tickets for your group in advance, which is also the cleanest way to avoid the touts at the entrance.
The Part Almost No Tour Mentions
In the main season the canyon stays open into the evening, and the cliffs and water are lit with a colour projection. Almost every operator is long back in Kutaisi by then.
For a small private group it is a genuinely different visit: no queue for the boat, no coach parties on the trail, and the gorge lit in a way you will not see in anyone else’s photographs. It needs confirming for your date, because evening opening is seasonal and weather dependent, and we check it before we build the itinerary.
What Pairs With Martvili
Prometheus Cave
About 1.4 km of lit halls roughly 80 metres underground, with stalactite chambers and an underground boat ride. The most common pairing, and the best wet-weather backup.
Okatse Canyon and Kinchkha
A cliff-edge walkway hanging above the gorge, and a three-tier waterfall of roughly 25, 70 and 35 metres nearby. Adds about 45 minutes of driving.
Balda Canyon
Fifteen minutes from Martvili and the opposite in character: smaller, rougher, far quieter, and swimming is actually allowed.
Martvili Monastery
A monastery complex above the town with origins going back well over a thousand years, and a view across Samegrelo.
Sataplia Reserve
Dinosaur footprints, a small cave and a glass viewing platform, closer to Kutaisi and easy to add on the return.
Kutaisi itself
Gelati Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral sit on the way back. See our Kutaisi Tour for the city side of this region.
What Disappoints People, and How We Avoid It
Crowds and queues
Martvili is one of the most visited sites in Georgia and the gorge is small. Midday in July is the worst version of it. We go early on a weekday wherever the itinerary allows, and in shoulder season the difference is dramatic.
Pressure at the entrance
Visitors regularly report being pushed toward extra paid experiences near the gate. With tickets already bought and a guide alongside you, that simply does not happen.
The boat that did not run
After heavy rain the boats stop, and travellers who came only for that ride leave unhappy. We tell you the night before and reshape the day toward Prometheus Cave or Okatse instead.
Underestimating the drive
Martvili is genuinely far from Tbilisi. Done as a Tbilisi day trip it is ten to twelve hours in a vehicle and on your feet. Based in Kutaisi it is a relaxed half day.
Kutaisi, Tbilisi or Batumi
| Starting point | Distance | Realistic day | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kutaisi | About 50 km | 5 to 7 hours with one more stop | The natural base, and the easiest version |
| Batumi | About 145 km | 8 to 10 hours | Coastal holidays adding one inland day |
| Tbilisi | About 277 km | 12 hours or more | Only when it is part of a transfer west |
If you are heading to the coast afterwards, this route works better as a stop on the way to Batumi than as a return trip from the capital.

Why Partners Book Martvili Through Travel Door
Travel Door is a destination management company, not a reseller. Vehicles, drivers and licensed guides are our own. We buy entrance, boat and zipline tickets in advance so groups are not splitting into queues, we check the river and the weather before departure, and we hold a wet-weather alternative for every Martvili booking. Group departures in this region thin out badly between November and April, which is exactly when a private operator matters. Agents can request net rates from our team. Martvili Canyon Tour Questions
How long does a Martvili Canyon tour take?
Two hours at the canyon itself covers the trail and the boat. From Kutaisi a half day of five to seven hours fits Martvili plus one more site. From Tbilisi the same day runs twelve hours or more.
How far is Martvili Canyon from Kutaisi and Tbilisi?
About 50 km from Kutaisi, roughly an hour, and about 277 km from Tbilisi, four to five hours each way. Batumi is about 145 km away.
Is the boat ride included in the entrance ticket?
No. Entrance covers the visitor centre and the 700 metre walking trail. The boat ride and the zipline are separate tickets bought at the site.
How long is the Martvili Canyon boat ride?
Roughly 300 metres and 15 to 20 minutes on an inflatable boat, through the northern section of the gorge that has no footpath.
Can children go on the boat?
Children under five, or under one metre tall, are not allowed on the boat. The walking trail is fine for families with younger children.
What happens if the boat is cancelled?
Boats stop when heavy rain raises the river. We check conditions before departure and move the day toward Prometheus Cave, Okatse or Balda so the trip still works.
Can you swim in Martvili Canyon?
No. Swimming in the protected gorge, including the old Dadiani bathing pools, is prohibited. Balda Canyon, about fifteen minutes away, does allow swimming.
What is the best time to visit Martvili Canyon?
Weekday mornings, and shoulder season rather than midsummer. Late spring and autumn give good water levels with far smaller crowds, and autumn colour is a reason in itself.
Is there a zipline at Martvili Canyon?
Yes, near the visitor centre, ticketed separately from entry. It can be added to the ticket when we book for your group.
What else can be combined with Martvili Canyon?
Prometheus Cave is the most common pairing, followed by Okatse Canyon and Kinchkha Waterfall. Balda Canyon, Martvili Monastery and Sataplia Reserve all fit a longer day.
