The short answer

What is a Jermuk tour from Yerevan?

It is a day trip south into Vayots Dzor to the spa town of Jermuk. Most routes also stop at Khor Virap, Noravank and an Areni winery, which is why the day runs long. In Jermuk you taste the waters, walk to the waterfall and ride the cable car.
Good fit if you
like mountain air and slow towns, or need one relaxed day in a packed itinerary.

The one stop people remember

Warm, hot, hotter: the drinking gallery

Jermuk means warm spring, and the gallery is where the name makes sense. Taps along the wall pour water at different temperatures, each with its own mineral balance. You take a cup and work your way along.
About 30
The easiest to drink. Most people start at this end of the hall.
About 40
Noticeably warm, with a stronger mineral taste.
About 50
Hot enough to sip slowly. Take care with the cup and with children.
Degrees Celsius, and they do vary. Your guide will point out which tap is which.
The gallery is for drinking, not bathing
This catches people out. You taste the water here, you do not sit in it. Bathing and spa treatments happen inside the hotels and sanatoriums and need booking ahead, so tell us early.

Down in the gorge

The waterfall, and the walk to it

The falls come off the gorge wall in thin streams rather than one solid curtain, which is where the name Mermaid’s Hair comes from. There is a viewing point near the road and a path to the base.
Gorge rim
About 70 m
The drop, measured from the lip. Some sources round it up to 72 m.
Arpa river
Jermuk waterfall falling in thin streams into the Arpa gorge
Khor Virap monastery on the plain with Mount Ararat behind it
Noravank monastery below the red cliffs of its canyon
Jermuk ropeway gondola rising above pine forest
Steaming natural hot spring pools in the hills above Jermuk
Gndevank monastery inside its walled yard in the Arpa valley

How you travel, and where you start

Most people choose this

Private tour from Yerevan

Your own guide and driver, so the day bends to you, not to a timetable.
For your own people

Group tour, your group only

Family, friends or colleagues, quoted as one booking.
Cross border

Starting from Tbilisi

We are a Caucasus company, so the trip can start on the Georgian side.
Going without a driver?
Minibuses run from Kilikia bus station and take three to four hours each way, leaving little daylight in Jermuk. A private car is what makes the classic route possible in a day.
The honest question

One long day, or a night in Jermuk?

One day

Doable, and most people do it.

Two days

The town opens up once you stop watching the clock.
Going on south afterwards? A second night turns this into a southern loop with our Tatev Monastery tour.
Add a detour

What you can add to a Jermuk tour

About 10 km from town

Gndevank Monastery

Built around 936 by Princess Sophia of Syunik, down beside the Arpa. Quiet, walled and often empty.
Jeep track, 4x4 only

Jermuk geysers and hot springs

Warm pools up in the hills, around 32 degrees, bubbling every few minutes. Bring a swimsuit and a towel.
On the classic route

Areni wine tasting

The Areni grape grows in the valley you drive through. It pairs naturally with our Khor Virap and Noravank tour.

Four things most Jermuk pages leave out

None of these ruin the day. They change how we plan it.
Mineral water is not medicine
People come for the water and the spas offer treatments. We are a travel company, not a clinic, so we book the visit and leave health advice to your doctor.
The first sip surprises people
The water tastes strongly of salts, the hot taps more so. Most people need a second cup before they like it, and the cooler taps are the easy place to start.

When to go

Jermuk through the year

If you only have one date
Late May and late September. The waterfall is full, the gorge path is dry and the town is quiet.
Pack for the altitude
At 2,080 m the evening turns cold even after a hot day in Yerevan. Bring a layer, proper shoes and a swimsuit if a spa is on your list.
