Tatev Monastery Tour from Yerevan: The World's Longest Cable Car to a Cliff-Top Monastery
In short
Tatev Monastery sits about 250 km south of Yerevan, roughly 4 to 5 hours by road. Most day trips take 13 to 15 hours in total, since the drive alone is 8 to 10 hours of the day. The monastery dates from the 9th century, and the only way in by cable car is called the Wings of Tatev, the longest non-stop reversible cable car in the world at 5.7 km. The cable car is closed every Monday. Because the drive is so long, many travellers choose to stay one night in the nearby town of Goris instead of returning the same day.

Why Travellers Make the Long Drive
Why it is called Tatev
The word "tatev" means "give wings" in Armenian. One old story says the monastery was once so full during prayer that worshippers asked God for wings, so some could fly off and leave room for others.

When the Cable Car Runs
Ways to Reach Tatev
- Private guided tour: a driver and guide, with the day planned around you. This is how we run it.
- Shared group tour: other travellers on a bus, on a long fixed schedule.
- Rental car: good roads, but still a full day of driving each way.
- Public bus or shared taxi: possible to Goris, but there is no simple way to do this route in a single day without a tour or your own vehicle.
Know Before You Go
- The cable car is closed every Monday, so we avoid planning around that day.
- Bring a jacket. The monastery sits high up, and it can be windy and cool even in summer.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Khndzoresk involves steps, and the monastery grounds are uneven in places.
- Carry cash. Small shops, the canteen, and parking often prefer local currency.
- Group tours usually ride the cable car one way only.
- Cover shoulders and knees inside the monastery.
- Strong wind or heavy snow can pause the cable car for safety. We always have a backup plan.
