Kumayri, Alexandropol, Leninakan, Gyumri
Old maps and older locals use all four names. Your guide uses them too, which makes the streets easier to read.

Renamed by Tsar Nicholas I after his wife, Alexandra Fyodorovna.

The walking line
The Gyumri City Tour route, stop by stop
Most stops sit within 1 to 2 km of the main square, about 3 km of easy walking in all. The car helps with the hills and the add-ons.
- Vartanants Square, 20 min: your guide sets the scene and explains why the city had four names
- Seven Wounds and Holy Saviour's, 40 min: two churches, each with its own earthquake story
- Kumayri quarter, 60 min: carved doors, balconies and iron gates in the tuff streets
- Dzitoghtsyan House-Museum, 40 min: how a well-off Gyumri family lived in 1872
- Gallery or workshop, 45 min: the Aslamazyan Sisters Gallery or a blacksmith's workshop
- Black Fortress, 30 min: finish with the round fortress and a view across the city
Museums close on Mondays
The Aslamazyan Gallery and the architecture museum are usually shut that day. On a Monday we swap in more walking and a workshop visit.

2023 · UNESCO listing
Gyumri's blacksmiths, now on UNESCO's list
In 2023 UNESCO added the Tradition of blacksmithing in Gyumri to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The craft almost vanished across Armenia in the mid 20th century. In Gyumri, smiths still make and repair gates, railings and chandeliers, and pass the skill on through families, community museums and two specialised schools.
- Look up at the iron balconies and gates in Kumayri
- Ask for a workshop stop where one is open to visitors
- A rewarding day for photographers and craft lovers
Taste of Gyumri
What to eat on a Gyumri City Tour
We plan lunch in the old centre around your tastes. Four dishes worth asking for:
Ponchik
Warm cream-filled donuts, sold near the main square.
Khurjin
Lamb baked inside lavash bread, a hearty local plate.
Clay-pot chanakh
Lamb and vegetables slow cooked in a clay pot.
Ghapama
A pumpkin stuffed with rice and dried fruit, common in autumn.
Honest history
A city that keeps rebuilding
Gyumri was shaken by earthquakes in 1926 and again on 7 December 1988, when the Spitak earthquake, magnitude 6.8, struck northern Armenia. Some streets are fully restored and some still wait. Your guide tells this story with care, and you will see both scars and repaired fronts as you walk.
Add a detour
Add Marmashen or Harichavank to your Gyumri City Tour
Add-on · 10 km from the city · about 1 hour
Marmashen Monastery
Five buildings of the 10th century stand just outside Gyumri. The main church was built between 986 and 1029 by Prince Vahram Pahlavuni. His family also held Amberd fortress on Mount Aragats.
Add-on · 30 km from the city · about 1.5 hours
Harichavank Monastery
A complex from the 7th to the 13th century, with a medieval school and a scriptorium. The writer Avetik Isahakyan studied here, and a religious school still runs today.
From Yerevan, one add-on usually fits in the day. With a night in Gyumri you can see both.

Pair Gyumri with another day
Gyumri works well as day two or three of a trip. Heading north, a second day links it with our Debed Canyon tour and its UNESCO monasteries. Or point the car at one of these.
- Echmiadzin and Zvartnots: the mother cathedral and a ruined seventh century rotunda
- Garni and Geghard: a Greco-Roman temple and a monastery cut into rock
- Khor Virap and Noravank: Ararat views, then red cliffs and a medieval monastery
- Sevan and Dilijan: a high mountain lake and a green forest town
- Tatev Monastery: a cliff edge monastery in the south, famous for its cable car
